Mitchell & Ness Nostalgia Co. is a company specializing in sports wear. They are located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The company was established in 1904 and is one of the oldest producer of sportswear and sports equipment. Mitchell & Ness have risen to the top of the market all over the world acquiring licenses for Major League Baseball (MLB), National Basketball Association (NBA), National Football League (NFL) and college (NCAA). Mitchell & Ness is a top tier in its field producing shirts, jackets, tank tops, hats and snap backs.
1904 Two partners, Frank P. Mitchell and Charles M. Ness founded a sports shop that specialized in handcrafted tennis racquets, golf clubs and other sports equipment. This was located on Arch Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
In 1917, a young boy named Sisto Capolino travelled from Italy to Philadelphia with the hopes of finding a job and earning money. The 13 year old Sisto began sweeping floors and handling Mitchell & Ness customers learning English at the same time. Sisto then started making tennis rackets and golf balls. Eighteen years later, he became store manager.
In 1925, Mitchell & Ness started designing and manufacturing sports uniforms for high schools and different college teams in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas.
In 1933, Mitchell & Ness becomes official partners with the Philadelphia Eagles after joining the NFL.
1933 - 1963, Mitchell & Ness expands greatly and in 1930 becomes official partners with the Philadelphia Phillies and the Philadelphia Athletics.
In 1967, Mitchell & Ness becomes the supplier of hockey sticks for the newest NHL team at the time, the Philadelphia Flyers. At that time, Mitchell & Ness had been providing clothing for the Philadelphia Eagles for 30 years, this partnership stopped after the club was bought later that year.
1963-1990: In 1987, Sports Illustrated released an article about the hottest baseball jerseys on the market. The article greatly influenced the sales of jerseys, especially baseball jerseys by Mitchell & Ness. In 1988, Mitchell & Ness obtained the rights to publish the original Cooperstown Collection. This went so well that they also got the rights to produced jerseys for the NBA, NFL and NHL. In the following years, there was growing trend with sportswear and a lot of this was seen on the streets, in music videos, magazines and with celebrities.
1990-2013: Mitchell & Ness products becomes the most sought after on the market and went on to produce NBA ALL star weekend jerseys. In 2005, Mitchell & Ness got the rights to produce the authentic Michael Jordan NBA jerseys which was followed by a further increase in popularity. Shortly after, Mitchell & Ness opened a flagship store in the trendy area of Tokyo, Japan.
